This Holiday Season, Experience a Road Scholar Educational Adventure

With the holiday season in full swing, it’s a great time to start planning for a special travel experience to create memories that go beyond traditional gifts. Road Scholar’s educational adventures for families are an opportunity to bring grandparents, parents and kids along for the journey of a lifetime. Expert faculty and study leaders lead each experience.

Road Scholar has offered Intergenerational adventures for grandparents and grandkids for decades — but Family programs take the experience a step further! Marcia Ludwig, 77, of Cupertino, Calif., has experienced 20 educational adventures with Road Scholar. Last summer she enrolled in her first Family program with her grandson, Aubrey, and daughter, Julie. The six-day adventure, "Family Adventure: Exploring and Rafting in Western Grand Canyon," included a 37-mile rafting excursion, and learning about Arizona cowboy life, as well as roping and riding (www.roadscholar.org/9878).

"It was a great experience and the leaders were incredible," Marcia says. "The study leaders and other kids were great at getting Aubrey into the activities, even though he was reluctant at times. He tried horseback riding, he learned about roping and lassoing and became great friends with another boy that he bonded with — it was hard when it was time to leave!"

Marcia had previously been to Peach Springs, but she wanted to challenge herself and try river rafting on this adventure. "It was terrifying, but it was fun, too," she said with a chuckle. "I can’t say enough about it. We all got a little out of our comfort zones and loved it. Our Group Leader made it fun for everyone. He even floated down the river with the kids!"

Next summer, Road Scholar offers more than 50 Family educational adventures worldwide. Options include:
