Road Scholar's Get-Togethers Draw Participants From Around The Country
Road Scholar’s Great American and Global Get-Togethers are exceptional educational events that provide insider access and opportunities to learn from top experts who illuminate local culture and history. From urban discoveries in Santa Fe and Lisbon to the natural wonders of Mount Rushmore and Banff, there’s a unique learning experience for everyone on these extraordinary adventures that are rich in camaraderie.
While the trend in educational travel is groups of smaller and smaller sizes, not-for-profit Road Scholar challenges the status quo with these unique educational events. Among the organization’s 5,500 learning adventures, you will find many designed to accommodate small groups, but some of the most popular experiences right now feature larger groups — much larger. Called "Great American Get-Togethers" and "Great Global Get-Togethers," these adventures can have as many as 200 participants.
"Our Get-Togethers are a wonderful way for Road Scholars to access a wide range of options for in-depth learning in some the most fascinating landscapes both in our country and internationally," says James Moses, president and CEO of Road Scholar. "The camaraderie of learning with other Road Scholars from around the country, combined with the flexibility to choose excursions and courses of study on select days, is an opportunity to tailor the educational experience unique to this selection of programs."
Get-Togethers are designed to welcome a large group of learners, with the benefit of dividing up into smaller groups for daily activities. Each learning adventure offers a variety of experiences and typically includes special airfare. Road Scholars enjoy learning with others and this adventure is a chance to get to know others who love to learn from around the country.
Great American Get-Togethers in North America
Great American Get-Together in the Tetons and Yellowstone
The Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem sets the stage for hands-on learning during Teton Science Schools expert-led small-group encounters in America’s most revered wildernesses.
Great American Get-Together at Mount Rushmore
Journey through the epochs from the era of the dinosaurs to the present as North America’s history of exploration, conflict and discovery unfolds before you. Consider how the hands of hard-rock gold miners came to carve Mount Rushmore out of granite and consider the geology that allowed the carving of another monument to the Native leader Crazy Horse. Stand atop that monument while you examine the lives of Native Americans before and during Custer’s 1870s exploration, meet with an author and photographer to interpret photographic images from the expedition and much more.
Great American Get-Together at Chautauqua Institution
Learn how to enrich your life and your health through studies of meditation, yoga, gardening, food and drink, humor or poetry and get hands-on in a Tai Chi class, writing workshop and more. Let the serene beauty of the surrounding Chautauqua region fill your mind, body and soul as you venture out into local wineries, enjoy a paddle wheel boat ride along the shores of Chautauqua Lake and take in the Chautauqua Institute’s unique landmarks such as the Palestine Park and Rain Gardens.
Great American Get-Together in Santa Fe
Join the most popular Road Scholar instructors for a week of fellowship, learning and fun in one of the most beautiful corners of the United States — Santa Fe, New Mexico. We’ve planned an amazing array of in-depth lectures, field trips and activities. Areas of study will cover the region’s history, art, culture and natural wonders.
Great Global Get-Togethers
Great Global Get-Together in Lisbon
Explore Portuguese art, architecture and agriculture with visits to a palace, a private art collection, a winery, a farmstead and more in Lisbon and nearby towns and villages. Walk along the city’s cobbled streets and learn about the azulejos on display through the city’s colorful architecture. Take scenic drives along the coast, through the surrounding countryside and into the Arrabida Mountain Range to see how olive trees, cork trees and Portuguese vines are cultivated and visit a monastery and a 14th-century palace.
Great Global Get-Together in Mexico City
Experience both the ancient and modern wonders of Mexico as you join other lifelong learners and our most popular local experts on explorations of Pre-Columbian sites, charming Colonial-era neighborhoods and colorful museums.
